What is the scoop on Protein World’s new protein shake, The Slender Blend? Well, the headline on the product’s page on the company’s website tells us it is a “high protein, low calorie meal replacement” powder. That sounds great! Further we are told the benefit of The Slender Blend is weight loss and its key features include its 147 calories per serving, that it is high in weight controlling protein, low in fat and carbs, gluten and soy free, strengthens skin, hair and nails, and is a nutritious meal replacement. Check, check, and check! Those all sound fabulous for a meal replacement shake! But wait, what does this all really mean? After a more thorough investigation of the product ingredients, we found that this too-good-to-be-true image may be just that.

We are happy to see the high protein and low calorie content in a protein shake intended for weight loss, though 147 calories is not the lowest compared to other products on the market, it is respectable. We are glad the product is low in fat and carbs, as one would expect from a weight loss shake, but more importantly, we like that it is gluten and soy free, as issues have been raised regarding both ingredients. However, it is the way in which Protein World accomplished this combination that we are concerned with. We found sucralose hidden at the end of the ingredients list! Why would Protein World include such a controversial ingredient as this artificial sweetener when the company prides itself on its 100% natural flavorings and lack of aspartame or artificial colorings? We found this quite counterintuitive.

In addition, we found their advertisement “high in weight controlling protein” to be misleading in suggesting to the customer that this product contains some special type of protein. They must be referring to whey protein concentrate, as it is the only protein listed in the ingredients, but this protein source is commonly used across the weight loss market. Taking this even further, we noticed an asterisk (*) at the end of the last two key features mentioned—“strengthens skin, hair and nails*” and “nutritious meal replacement*.” After searching the vicinity of these statements for the meaning of the asterisk, as well as the rest of the product information, we found it at the very bottom of the web page. It read as follows: “*These statements have not been evaluated by the Food and Drug Administration.” This was the cherry on top for our lack of support for The Slender Blend. The asterisk was found again after the claim, “We’ve also added a unique blend of green tea extract, raspberry ketones and multi vitamins to the mix, to curb those cravings and help you to become slimmer and healthier.” How can we trust the validity of this information with such a disclaimer? The takeaway for us is that Protein World has no credible evidence for the asterisked information and thus is promoting these product qualities to consumers without knowing whether they are even true.

Overall, after a deeper look at The Slender Blend from Protein World, the reality did not live up to the perception. Sure the packaging and presentation is attractive, but it’s the attractiveness of the ingredients that the customer will be drinking that we really care about.
